Coe Archery Company

I had the pleasure of talking to Cliff Coe on the phone at his home in Otter Lake, Mich. So few of the early leaders in archery remain. Cliff Coe started in archery at a summer camp where he worked in the early 40s. During the archery section of camp he made two bows, a 62 inch and a 56 inch osage bow. He still has these bows (I wish I still had my first bow). After camp he continued to make bows. In the beginning he used solid wood, then Fortisan strands to form a backing for his bows, and then plastic as it became available. He believes the greatest advancement in archery came with the use of fiberglass and maple laminations. This combination allowed for consistency and mass production. Most of his early bows had straight limbs, but in the early fifties he began making recurves. About this time he designed and used his "Slasher broadhead". The head did not catch on and was dropped from production. Now the "Slasher Broadhead" is a collectors item. Cliff Coe was among the first archers to collect a Newfoundland Caribou. When he arrived at the hunt he found a native American that had not in his 50 years as a guide seen a hunter using a bow. He had him demonstrate his skills at shooting. Satisfied he agreed to guide him. The first day Cliff shot a Carilbou at thirty yards, it ran fifty feet and collapsed. The guide said "Better then a gun, no noise". It would be great if all archers left that impression. Cliff Coe made bows through the 80s. Most of the bows listed are from Coe archery flyers that Mr. Coe sent to me, others from ads in archery magazines. While the list is far from complete, it should give an idea of the time period in which a Coe bow was made.
